Algernon Trust Opens Charity Shop in Daventry

Algernon Trust Opens Shop in Daventry

The Algernon Trust is a local Animal Sanctuary, Re-homing Centre & Wildlife Rescue, based in Whittlebury near Towcester. The Trust has recently opened a shop in Daventry, not only to raise funds desperately needed to help look after the animals in their care, but also to promote awareness of the Trust and in doing so re-home more animals and attract more volunteers which are urgently needed.

The trustees are very excited to announce that The Algernon Trust Charity Shop at 25 sheaf Street opened on friday 14th February, and already there has been a lot of interest and customers. Opening hours are currently: Tuesday - Saturday 10 - 4pm. We are hoping to open 6 days a week Monday to Saturday, but before we can we urgently need more volunteers to help in the shop.

Please consider donating any good quality clean items that are no longer needed.  We can accept all items including clothes as long as they are of good saleable quality. If you have furniture or electrical items please email Sarah (see below) first as we are only taking what would be useful to us, we cannot currently sell them in the shop unless they have been safety tested.

In response to the amount of donations people have kindly given, we are desperate for storage, mainly bookcases or tall storage units with shelves, with or without doors please!

There are people in the following towns where items can be dropped to be delivered to the shop – please do let us know if you are able to offer a collection point too!

Milton Keynes - Mark French
Northampton - Caz Carr
Banbury - Mel Loveridge (Pampered Paws)

Anyone interested in volunteering at the shop should contact Sarah for an application, this can also be downloaded from our facebook group or email: sarah.barrett@algernontrust.org.uk (Please note we do not have any paid positions available at this time)

The shop not only sells goods to raise funds, but also has an area dedicated to promoting the animals currently in need of fostering or needing new homes. Interested fosterers or adopters can come in and take away details of animals, or we can make arrangement for them to meet the cats and dogs. We hope this will help find more homes for the increasing number of animals coming into our care, and in doing so help us to  rescue more animals.

We also sell Algernon Trust  merchandise which helps to promote the Trust.

Directions:
To get to the shop from the south take the London Road into the town centre and when you get to the mini roundabout where the pedestrian street starts, turn left onto Oxford St and then take the next right and park in the car park. Take any of the alleys through to the Sheaf Street. If you have loads of stuff and need to be nearer, the other option is to go over the mini roundabout and then take the first left into Foundry Place. Follow it right to the end - it curves right round. Then when you think you can't go any further park wherever you can and there is a small alley leading straight through to Sheaf Street, turn right and our shop is the one after the flower shop.Beware there is no official parking here, just loading and residents.

If you are coming down the A45 from Northampton, come into Daventry and turn right at the mini roundabout, and take the same directions turning left into Foundry Place.

You can follow the shop on Facebook www.facebook.com/Algernontrustshopdaventry

Algernon Trust

The Animal Sanctuary was set up over twenty years ago when the founder Jane Shepherd moved to Whittlebury near Towcester. For the first eleven years it was a purely private enterprise paid for entirely out of her own pocket.

As the Sanctuary grew over the years, and having exhausted all of Jane's personal finances, the Algernon Trust was established in 2001 as a non-profit organisation in order to raise funds to keep the sanctuary going. Today the Sanctuary is well known and respected. It has achieved registered charitable status and has been entered into the Register of Charities with the Registered Charity Number 1151827.

In 1991 Jane arrived with just five feral cats, one fox and one rabbit. Today there are usually at least sixty cats, more than twenty dogs, plus foxes and assorted poultry in the Trust's care. Jane also provides a wildlife rescue service 24 hours a day 52 weeks a year.

The Trust re-homes cats and dogs where possible but many of the cats Jane takes in are sick and/or elderly who need to remain at the Sanctuary for the rest of their days. Currently there are over thirty residents. The Trust has become as much a hospice and retirement home for cats as a re-homing centre, and caring for sick and elderly feline friends puts an enormous strain on the Trust's finances.
Animals are taken in from a wide area not just from Northamptonshire and adjacent counties but from all over the country.  The Trust has a strict “no kill” policy and Jane has no age restriction and has taken in cats over 20 years old.  All animals are neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped before being rehomed, all at the expense of the Algernon Trust.

The Trust only has 4 kennels, all donated, plus the old ferret pen for emergencies.  Foster homes are relied on to provide temporary care for dogs and cats awaiting adoption. Sometimes it is necessary to keep dogs at private boarding kennels to ensure they are not put to sleep when the Sanctuary is full.  The kennels are paid for by the Trust.  Foster carers make a huge difference, not only does this reduce the cost of boarding kennels but it enables the dogs to live in a home environment until such time that they find their permanent homes. Fosterers provide love and food for the animals and the Trust provides support and covers vets bills.

For further information about adopting or fostering any of these cats / kittens,
please contact Jane on 07977 555238 / 01327 858238
or Sarah on 01327 341826

Please note that all adoptions are subject to a home check and an adoption fee

 Tamsin

Tamsin is a lovely, very friendly pure black female who is approximately 20 months old. She came to us from Milton Keynes as a stray with two kittens who have since been re homed. She is neutered and chipped. She is alright with other cats but would probably prefer to be the only cat. She is very affectionate but can sometimes get a bit carried away, so she would not be suitable to live with very young children. Tamsin is currently staying at the Trust. Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

Dolly

Dolly is very pretty and full of beans, very playful and boisterous. She can get a bit carried away out of enthusiasm and attention seeking rather than any sort of aggression. As soon as you open the door she is there looking for attention. She tends to keep away from the other cats but does not show them any aggression. She is not suitable to live with young children. She is neutered and chipped and currently staying at the Trust. Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

 Snowy

Snowy is a very handsome pure white male who is approximately 1 - 1 1/2 years old. He is very playful and loves to be fussed and combed. He is a very affectionate cat. He is fine with other cats as long as they are not confrontational. He is neutered and micro-chipped and currently staying near Daventry. If you are interested in Snowy, please call Sarah on 01327 341826. Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

Charlie

Sooty

Charlie & Sooty

Sooty & Charlie are brothers, born March 2008 and have come into our care due to owners death. They had been in a cattery since before Christmas 2013. They must be homed together, they are used to a quiet home. Sooty likes to hunt, but is a big softy and likes to nuzzle feet!  He is a friendly boy and loves sitting on your lap and being stroked. Charlie is lazy and greedy but quite cuddly. Due to a difficult few months for the cats they may take a little while to settle in. They are lucky enough to be staying in a foster home near Daventry. Adoption subject to a home visit and adoption fee.

Jessie & Minnie
have found a long term foster home

Jessie is a very beautiful 12 year old Rough Collie. Sadly her owner has passed away and she needs to find a quiet home with her companion Minnie, a pretty tortoiseshell cat who is around 11 years old and has spent the last few years as a house cat. They are currently staying in a foster home in Banbury. Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

Here is a message from their current fosterers - Two sweet old ladies who need a quiet home to retire to with people who like to cuddle, as these two are real cuddle monsters! While they have been with us Jessie has changed from a very sad old girl with a tail that did not wag as she was grieving for the loss of her owner, to a cheeky funny and very loving old girl, she does not bark (only at a lawnmower apparently) but squeaks at you when she wants something which 9 times out of 10 is another cuddle. She enjoys short walks on the flat and plods along happily with short spurts of speed. She likes to great everyone she meets 2 legged and 4 – the 2 legged ones she leans into their legs and looks up into their faces – how can anyone resist (no-one has so far) She will wait if someone is behind us in the park for them to catch up so she can snuggle in and say “hello”.  Mini stayed away from us for the first few weeks, but now she is as affectionate as Jess, when you say her name, she makes very cute noises and reaches out her tiny little paw to touch you. She seeks out company in the evening and likes to sit on a lap in front of the TV. Mini is the boss in the relationship and rules with a tiny but firm paw. They sleep at night face to face noses almost touching......beautiful animals inside and out.

Ace

Ace is a 7 1/2 year old very petite black female with a fleck of white on her chest.
I’m fairly nervous and easily scared. Fast movements make me scared. I like to wander around and can be quite aloof, I’m an independent moggy you see. Occasionally if the urge takes me I may surprise you by wanting a cuddle on your lap, I may not look like I’m enjoying it very much but you will hear me purring. I don’t like it when them peoples try to stroke me and I can’t see them, keep them hands where I can see them please and if I do allow you to pet me I like long slow strokes please, I have my glossy black coat to keep neat. I love to clean and be clean, I happily toilet outside or in a nice clean litter tray. I have this thing in my neck which apparently tells them peoples who I am and where I belong if I get lost. Biscuits are my favourite and I like some meat in that Jelly stuff. I don’t really like meat in that gravy very much. My favourite flavour is chicken. I dream all day long about those stick treats, any variety, they make me sooo happy. I hear the human with that wrapper when I am gardens away and I go running home and climb the humans leg to get to those stickies, they are the best but they just don’t last very long. I also like potatoes, the human looks at me funny when I hover and she is peeling potatoes, she laughed a lot when I stoled and ate some. They taste so good. I loves a scratch post, I don’t scratch the furniture at all, it’s just not the same as my post. Also, the human has this stuff they call cat nip, it makes me go funny and I like to play with my toys a lot when they have cat nip stuff sprayed on it.  I don’t like loud noises and that thing the human pushes around the floor that makes a load of noise is horrible. The lady human tells the man human he doesn’t use it enough, I think she calls it a hoover. Really fast moving things make me jump. I have only ever lived with big humans and cats, I don’t know about small humans or other animals. Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

Trixie (TRIXIE IS RESERVED)

This is Trixie a 5 month female kitten found by a farmer's wife in their coal shed, thought to have been dumped and found her way to shelter. She has been de flead and wormed. She is a quiet but very sweet little girl and purrs alot. She is adjusting to being in with another cat at the moment! She will be spayed as soon as possible. She is being fostered near Daventry.  Adoption subject to homecheck and adoption fee

Purdie (was Bertie)

Purdie is a lovely black and white female born in 2003.  She is very friendly, loves laps and sleeping on the bed. She is fine with children and does not seem at all bothered by other cats, but we are not sure how she is with dogs. She will make someone a wonderful companion. She is neutered, fully vaccinated and will be micro chipped. Purdie is currently staying in a foster home in Daventry. Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

Jackson (JACKSON IS RESERVED)

Jackson arrived as a stray to the Sanctuary. We think he is about 8 months old & we have arranged for him to be neutered. He is very, very friendly and settled with two other cats at his foster home instantly. He is gorgeous! Adoption subject to homecheck & adoption fee.

Diva

Diva is a lovely black and white female about 5 months old. She has been diagnosed with possible food intolerance and is currently on a restricted diet. She is quite nervous and small for her age, so a home without young children would be preferred. She is neutered and chipped. Diva is currently staying in a foster home near Daventry. Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

  Nut & Bolt

Nut and Bolt were found scared and abandoned with their mother. Nut is a pretty female tortoiseshell and Bolt is a handsome black and white male. Both are feral and have been neutered. They are looking for an outside home together on a farm / stable. They must have a secure place to be shut in for at least 2 weeks prior to releasing. They are currently staying in a foster home near Daventry. Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

Hetty (has been adopted)

Hetty is very affectionate but not very keen on other cats.  She is very sweet and would prefer to be the only cat and have her human's full undivided attention! She is neutered and chipped and currently staying in a foster home near Daventry. Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

   Giggs & Eric

Giggs and Eric are both very affectionate and loving 3 year old black and white females! They are reluctantly having to be re homed as their present owners moved to live on a narrow boat and both cats have fallen into the water numerous times. Luckily the owners were there, heard them fall in and were able to get them out, but they are terrified that the worst may happen. Both cats are neutered, chipped and vaccinated. They desperately need to be re homed together and are not used to young children. Please call Sarah on 01327 341826 if you can offer them a safe home. Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

Tara

8 Year old Tara is needing a new home as her previous owners no longer want her.  She is incredibly timid & has spent most of the time cowering behind her litter tray since she arrived.  Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

Daisy (is reserved)

Daisy has recently come into our care, she is a lovely black and white neutered female approximately 2 years old.  Sadly she has been badly treated and kicked, so she tries to be friendly but as she is so unsure she spits and hisses. She just wants to be loved and treated well. She urgently needs a very patient caring person to adopt or foster her to help her trust people again and not be afraid of them. For this reason she cannot be re-homed with children. Daisy is currently staying at the Trust. Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

Missy

Tansy (TANSY IS REHOMED)

Adorable Tansy is an 8 year old Patterdale terrier who came in to our care when her previous owner was no longer able to care for her. She is now searching for a loving retirement home. Tansy is still an active girl who likes going for walks, but she needs to stay on the lead while out. She gets along with other dogs, so long as they are large and male! She is not quite as keen on small dogs. She may be able to live with a calm cat. Tansy is not used to children, but could probably live with older, sensible children in her new home.  She is used to having company most of the time.  If you are looking for a dog with real terrier character, please contact us! Tansy is lucky enough to be staying in a foster home in Bicester. Adoption subject to homecheck & adoption fee..

Yogi (YOGI IS NO LONGER LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME)

Yogi is a very handsome semi coated male German Shepherd born on 9/08/12 so currently 17 months old. He is fantastic with other dogs, and children from as young as 2 years old. He travels well and is house trained. He is fed on Arden Grange food as when he was a puppy some foods upset his tummy, though he has since had bits of other food and been fine. He loves chewy toys and treats. Yogi would prefer to live with another dog as he has never lived alone. Yogi is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and up to date with his flea and worm treatments. He does have a left hip dysplasia and is currently on treatment for this. Sadly due to ill health, Yogi's current owners have had to make the very difficult decision to re home him. Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

Max (MAX IS ON HOME TRIAL)

Max is a really friendly 2 year old male long legged Jack Russell Terrier. He's a happy boy, very waggy. Fine with most other dogs, but not cat tested. Toby is a very friendly affectionate boy, good with children and seems to be alright with other dogs.  Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

Shadow (SHADOW IS NOW REHOMED)

Shadow is a male German Shepherd cross approximately 18 months old. He is a lovely boy who will make a very loyal and lively companion. He is currently staying in a foster home and is getting acquainted with their cat. He is very intelligent and obedient, responding well to basic commands. He can live with older children.
Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

Snoopy (SNOOPY IS REHOMED)

Snoopy is a black lab, possibly a cross. He's been with his previous family since he was a puppy and will be 8 in February. He is a lovely friendly dog, very loyal and very house trained too. He has not had much experience with cats to live with but does like to chase them if he sees them whilst walking so unlikely to be able to live with one.  He is good with children and likes lots of fuss and attention although he is also happy with his own company as likes to sleep, (though he does snore!!)  When he first meets someone he gets a little over excited but after about 10 minutes he settles down and gets to know his surroundings. He doesn't chew things but does have a habit of stealing cuddly toys as his baby and taking them  everywhere with him, (even for a wee!) He likes regular walks and loves to be around people. Is very good off the lead and is well trained.  He's good with other dogs, has stayed with terriers and other Labradors in the past. Has never lived with another dog though this would be unlikely to be a problem.  In the past he's has a skin allergy, this was really most common when he was a puppy and hasn't flared up much since. He is currently staying in the Buckingham area. Adoption subject to homecheck & adoption fee.

Izzie

Izzy is a very sweet 18 month old Staffie who has come into our care from the pound having been saved from being put to sleep. She is a lively playful girl and does need some work on her training. She would be best suited as an only animal as she is not too good with other dogs and not to be homed with cats. She is currently staying in kennels near Spalding, but urgently needs a foster home or permanent home. Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

Skipper

Skipper is thought to be around 3 years old and is a very affectionate Staffie. He has had a rough time judging by the sores and bald patches that were on him when he first arrived into our care. Remarkably he is still an incredibly loving little dog. He is good with people and other dogs but probably not cats. Ideally he would prefer to be the only animal. He is currently staying in a foster home in Northamptonshire where he has progressed hugely both physically and behaviourally & he is now ready to find a forever home to call his own. Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.

Luke

Luke was an unclaimed stray in the pound who has been saved from being put to sleep. He is a handsome 1 year old male Blue Brindle Staffie cross. He is currently staying in kennels near Spalding, but urgently needs a foster home or permanent home. Adoption subject to a home check and adoption fee.

Dolly
Sweet Dolly is about 3 yrs old; spayed, vaccinated, chipped. Lovely sweet and affectionate Staffie Cross, seems fine with other dogs but not trusted with cats. She does need a calm environment with no children or other pets where she can readjust to family life with someone who is willing to work with her on her training. She is very agile and would make an excellent agility dog or would enjoy playing flyball. Dolly adores playing anything with a ball! Here is a short video of Dolly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdmRyQZWceg
Dolly is currently staying at the Sanctuary. Adoption subject to homecheck & adoption fee.

Holly

Holly is an English Springer Spaniel and is 15 years old although she and everyone else thinks she is 5!!! She currently lives with Penny, however due to the age gap it is felt that they would cope with being seperated & have stayed in seperate places before without any problems, for holidays etc. Their current owner is having to work long hours and feels that it is unfair to leave them on their own for such long periods of time. They are not yet in our care & we are in urgent need of a foster carer in order to be able to help them.  A beautiful dog who needs not a lot of care by way of love and affection but not by way of walking due to her hips being less able to stand for the springiness that a spaniel likes to show off!! Although Holly is 15 she is in good health as per her recent vets visit. She is great with children and adults alike, doesn’t jump and happy to be around other dogs or by herself with the humans. Great on and off the lead and when able to loves to swim and fetch. Holly has never lived with cats. Adoption subject to homecheck & adoption fee.

Penny (PENNY IS RESERVED)

Penny is a 5 year old Boxer Cross. She currently lives with Holly, however due to the age gap it is felt that they would cope with being separated & have stayed in separate places before without any problems, for holidays etc. Their current owner is having to work long hours and feels that it is unfair to leave them on their own for such long periods of time. They are not yet in our care & we are in urgent need of a foster carer in order to be able to help them.  Penny loves to cuddle……all the time….but is also happy to sit elegantly with her legs crossed to let you know she thinks she’s royalty. She gets excited by the door going and does like to bark at it when knocked on however  does not bark at anything else. She does however like to talk to you occasionally with a little wolf howl (almost like Scooby doo!) Penny is good off the lead and will come back when called and clapped at. She has a tendency to run after a bike or a runner so she can run alongside them! Altogether a beautiful, human almost dog with a need of a family to love, cuddle and take her on long walks.  Whilst Penny is good with children, she does have a tendancy to jump so would suit a home with teenage children. Penny has never lived with cats. Adoption subject to homecheck & adoption fee.

Archie

Archie arrived at the Sanctuary after his family were unable to keep him. He is 3 years old, good with other dogs, but gets agitated with young children. He seems ok with the cats that he has met at the Sanctuary. He knows his basic commands and is well behaved & friendly. Tirry (right)

Tirry

Tirry is around 3 years old and came into our care after being rescued from the streets of Romania She is a very loving dog who just wants to be cuddled and touched. Attention for her is everything be it good or bad. She isn't aggressive to people, but does jump up, so can't be homed with little people under the age of 8. She is living with another dog in her foster home, but he is very submissive and just wants to play. She can be aggressive with other dogs when out walking, in Romania she would have had to fight for her place and it is likely that is what she is trying to do here. She would be better more suited in a home as an only dog, or with a male that would be submissive/no threat to her. She is about to start some socialisation classes to help her with this issue. She is not at all bothered by cats and is generally just interested in food!
Tirry has sustained an injury to her back legs at some point before she came to the UK, she has had some hair loss, likely through the stress of her travel & therefore the scars can be seen, it does not seem to trouble her in any way.
Out and about Tirry is really good on the lead. She'll just trot quite happily beside or just in front of you. Tirry is currently staying in a foster home near Banbury while she finds her permanent home. Adoption subject to home check and adoption fee.
